Location: 5755 Cedar Lane, Columbia, MD 21044
Shift : Day
Casual Time (less than 20 hours); PRN Weekends
Day Shift, 06:30am - 03:00pm
Non-Exempt
Position Summary:
The PCT is a clinically trained staff that can better support the operation of the PACU area on weekends. The PCT will be able to do the following but are not limited to assisting the PACU nurse in documenting V/S, draws blood and collects other specimens (urine, sputum), inserts/removes IVs, does EKGs, inserts/removes foley catheters, assists patients to the bathroom, assists in patients ambulation, and assists in getting patient changed; including turning over a pacu bay, restocking, and transporting that is done by an ORA. In addition, the PCT can better assist the nurses in times of critical situations in the Main PACU i.e. code, rapid response, ICU patients in the PACU, etc.
Education:
Must have a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma, completion of an approved medical training program beyond high school (i.e. PCT training program, Nursing Technician). Completion of an approved phlebotomy course preferred.
Work Experience:
A minimum of one (1) hands-on patient care experience in a hospital setting providing patient care is preferred. Must pass the medical knowledge test.
Licensure/Certification:
Nursing Assistant Certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing required.
Knowledge/Skills:

  • Takes and record patient's vital signs, including pulse oximetry and pain level screen.
  • Performs 12 lead electrocardiograms.
  • Performs bedside glucometer testing.
  • Documents patient input and output.
  • Starts saline locks.
  • Collects samples such as urine, blood and sputum from patient for testing.
  • Performs ostomy care, simple dressing changes, give enemas, and bladder catheterization, as ordered.
  • Provides assistance to patients with activities of daily living.
  • Provides comfort and safety measures, assists with personal hygiene, and turning and positioning of patients.
  • Identifies potential medical emergencies and reports to RN immediately.
  • Reports variances/changes in patient status to appropriate patient care team member.
  • Assists with rehabilitation treatments under the supervision of the Physical Therapist, if done in pacu
  • Assists in the maintenance of communication with the family and care team.
  • Participates in unit based committees and improvement teams.
  • May provide or reinforce information to patient and family as assigned by the RN.
  • Transport patients i.e. inpatient areas, procedure areas, to the car, etc.
  • Stocks the unit with needed/routine supplies and prepares bays for admission.
  • Orders patient nutrition and supplies.
  • Assists with the coordination and implementation of the plan of care as delegated by the RN.
