General Summary of Position
The Data Analytics Manager combines technical and business skills to promote and support improved performance through data and analytics; has a passion for discovering solutions hidden in large data sets; and is experienced at working with various stakeholders to improve business outcomes. The incumbent is adept at leveraging data to find opportunities for process optimization and using change management models to test the effectiveness of different courses of action. \rThe Data Analytics Manager supports the business and clinical operations of the MedStar Health Perioperative Service Line at a system level in alignment with the organization's strategic priorities. The incumbent manages relationships with and communicates data insights to leaders and key stakeholders spanning the various MedStar Health entities to gain operational efficiency, strengthen data-driven decision making, and drive clinical quality and business outcomes.\r\rThe Data Analytics Manager designs, codes, tests, and maintains relational databases; develops and maintains data analysis, measurement, and monitoring routines within operational and clinical domains including but not limited to perioperative capacity and utilization, staffing/resource patterns and requirements, patient throughput, and physician/staff performance and utilization.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates ease of working with unstructured data. Finds relationships across data sets and integrates data to unlock actionable information. Utilizes appropriate data sources and definitions for each analysis. Navigates and programs data extracts from relational databases (e.g. SQL).
  • Assumes responsibility for collecting business requirements, data validation, dashboard development, reporting, analysis, and interpretation. Identifies appropriate data sources and works with data owners to obtain appropriate data access.
  • Collaborates with other technical and operational teams throughout the organization to deliver data solutions which establish and meet business, technical and data governance requirements. Engages in the collection and analysis of operational, financial, and clinical data from disparate sources, including EMR, patient flow, and billing.
  • Demonstrates data analytics capabilities through development of meaningful key performance indicators (KPIs) and measurement systems compared to baseline performance; measures quantifiable improvement; and drives outcomes that impact MedStar's business operations.
  • Creates and maintains accurate design documentation and maintains repository of data architecture and design artifacts and procedures. Designs, coordinates, and executes pilots, prototypes, or proof of concepts, provides validation on specific scenarios and deployment guidance as required, meeting established goals and deadlines.
  • Imports and maintains data from a variety of sources to support data driven, continuous improvement activities across MedStar Health. Effectively escalates risks and issues, while communicating status updates.
  • Establishes and manages production data and analytics processes and deliverables. Develops and performs QA processes to ensure data accuracy. Troubleshoots issues and errors. Optimizes analyses and dashboards as requested.
  • Supports architectural guidelines for the data and analytics environment in areas including scalability, security, performance, data recovery, reliability and usability and applies those guidelines to the design and implementation of reporting and analytics projects.
  • Leads multiple projects and efforts including design sessions to gather requirements, report and analyze business features for the organizations leadership by orchestrating and delivering cohesive data solutions.
  • Engages with data stewardship by partnering with stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand, identify, and standardize data sources and data dictionaries that are used for enterprise analytics, business intelligence and reporting. Ensures data accuracy, business rules for metric calculations and validation of outputs.
  • Performs statistical analysis including hypothesis testing, regression analysis, factor analysis, capability comparison and variance analysis and articulates interpretation of statistical results.
  • Presents analytics to varying audiences, adjusting the presentation of the data based on target audience (ranging from senior executives to frontline personnel). Presents complex data with simplicity of design in a clear, easy to understand format. Applies data visualization methods effectively, using Tableau, to communicate complex ideas with clarity, precision, and efficiency in a manner that ensures accurate comprehension by the recipient.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary meetings, committees, and performance improvement teams, as required to support development of data platforms in alignment with business needs and promote data use in optimization of operations.
  • Stays abreast of industry standards, emerging technologies, and best practice with the intent of applying to current and future projects.
  • Demonstrates comfort with ambiguity and can produce clarity and create direction from assessment of a complex situation with limited guidance.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Engages and networks with the broader community of MedStar Health analysts and developers. Builds connectivity with and directly lends support towards broader MedStar Health Enterprise Analytics initiatives in alignment with organizational strategy and objectives

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education
  • Bachelor's degree in the healthcare field, analytics, biostatistics, informatics, computer science, business, or engineering required and
  • Master's degree in a related field preferred
    \r
    Experience
    • 3-4 years in data collection, management, analysis, and interpretation. Experience supporting customer groups through data analysis, report creation, and graphical presentation. required and
    • Tableau Desktop experience preferred and
    • Database development and maintenance. Metrics implementation, performance benchmarking, and data/metrics governance required and
    • Mathematical process modeling and simulation. Operational and/or clinical data in healthcare field and knowledge of the healthcare industry preferred

      • No special certification, registration or licensure required

        Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
        • Critical thinking, reasoning and problem solving. Demonstrated ability to understand business need(s) and conduct appropriate analysis to translate data into actionable insights. Ability to write complex SQL queries and demonstrated competence developing complex stored procedures, functions, triggers, and other database objects. Demonstrated proficiency with developing dashboards from large databases/data warehouses. Ability to translate concepts into tangible ideas and informative data deliverables. Excellent interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communication. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Visio and PowerPoint. Demonstrated proficiency with business intelligence software (Tableau Desktop preferred). Experience in the application of advanced statistical techniques and concepts (regression, properties of distributions, statistical hypothesis tests and proper usage, etc.). Knowledge of Python and experience working with Health Catalyst data warehouse preferred. Excellent resilience, comfort with ambiguity and bias toward results.
